3 Things to Prioritize Your Apartment Search

|

Picture this:

a top-floor, luxurious penthouse apartment that overlooks the Willamette River.

10 foot, floor-to-ceiling windows allow sunlight to radiate off the subway tile backsplash in the kitchen.

Brushed stainless steel appliances compliment the deep, espresso colored cabinetry.

Quartz countertops give that clean, luxurious feel to this open space kitchen.

The hardwood flooring meets up with plush carpet for a softer, warmer feel in the spacious living areas.

The extended patio can be accessed through the living room and the bedroom, ample space to feature a potted herb garden next to the high-top bar table that’s wonderful for entertaining on warm, summer nights.

That’s my dream apartment. And I didn’t even get started on the bathroom.

Unfortunately, if I want to have ALL those features, I’d have to build my own home. Heck, I can barely build an Ikea table! I don't want to build, I want to rent.

That’s why I must prioritize my wishes, wants, and needs.

Wishing

As kids, we wished upon a star. As adults, we wish that we don’t have to work. We wish that rent was free. We wish for an apartment with no neighbors. I wish for 10 foot, floor-to-ceiling windows and an extended patio. These wishes are for things that we know are generally impossible (but not always!).

Wanting

Such an overused word - but much more attainable than wishing. What do you want in your apartment that will improve your quality of life? I want the space to entertain guests on warm summer nights. I want to tend to a potted herb garden. I want subway tile backsplash and the small details that make a home unique. Wants are lower on the priority list – we can live without them, but we’d love if we could have them.

Needing

Aside from running water – this is something you can’t live without. You need a pet-friendly apartment to bring your best friend, Tucker. You need to find somewhere within your budget. You need a washer and dryer on site. You need to be in a certain school zone for your kids, or a neighborhood close to transit. You need a certain number of bedrooms.

Look at your lifestyle. Do you value a sense of community, or do you prefer to be on your own? Do you value security of your community and home? What’s your dream apartment like? Make a list of all the things you can’t live without and keep them at the top of your priority list when searching for a new home. You'll find tons of your needs AND wants at Sequoia homes.
