HOW TO DO ACCENT WALLS THE RIGHT WAY

Which wall do you paint? What color should it be? Don't even know where to start?

Here's six tips to ease your concerns and help you choose the perfect wall to paint.

1. IDENTIFY THE FOCAL POINT.

Don’t ignore the architecture! Look for defining elements of the room, such as a fireplace or arched doorway. These large elements draw focus, so it makes sense to highlight and emphasize that area. You don’t want the focus to be torn between two places in the room and create disorder. These defining elements don’t have to be built in, either. Paint the wall behind a large painting, headboard, bookcase, nook, or sofa to truly make the décor pop.

2. NO FOCAL POINTS?

Choose a shorter, smaller wall. Why? The larger the wall that you paint, the more “space” it will take up in the room. Don’t make your studio apartment seem any smaller because of the wall you chose to paint.

3. IDENTIFY THE FEELING OF THE ROOM.
LIVELY AND FUN ACCENT WALL PAINT COLOR BRINGS THIS ROOM TO LIFE WHILE COMPLIMENTING THE DECOR SCHEME
Your initial thoughts will guide you in choosing the perfect color. Do you want the room to be lively and fun, or cool and collected? Color makes all the difference. Integrate your accent wall color into the décor color scheme to make the place really come together.

4. DON'T MATCH, ACCENT.
COOL COLORED ACCENT WALLS CAN COMPLIMENT BRIGHTER DECOR COLORS TO ADD GREAT CONTRAST TO THE ROOM
The wall shouldn’t be the same color as your comforter or sofa. It should give prominence to the main piece of architecture or furniture (much like throw pillows and/or blankets). Aim for complementary colors that have a little bit of contrast to them.

5. THINK ABOUT THE LIGHTING.
FLOOR TO CEILING WINDOWS ALLOW FOR LOTS OF NATURAL LIGHT TO REFLECT OFF THE ACCENT WALL PAINT
Check out the amount of natural light entering the room and the way the windows face. Rooms with lots of morning light will have a cooler feel than the warm tones of afternoon light. Try to complement warm paint colors with walls that see morning light and cooler paint colors with walls that get afternoon light to balance warm and cold.

6. DON'T PAINT YOUR OWN WALL, AND DON'T PAY FOR IT.
