Two Sequoia Communities Rank Among Nation’s Elite 1% for Online Reputation in 2025

Walnut Creek, CA - Venu at Galleria and Harrison Tower have once again secured a place among the nation’s top-performing apartment communities for online reputation on the ORA Power Ranking Elite 1% list, recognized by J Turner Research. These communities continue to set the standard earning multi-year recognition for their exceptional resident experiences and strong online reputations. The ORA Power Ranking model analyzes over 150,000 properties using lifetime sentiment data from multiple review platforms. In 2025, just 1,312 properties achieved the bragging rights of making the Elite 1% list.

Venu at Galleria, located in Roseville, CA, led the Sequoia portfolio once again, closing out 2025 with an ORA score of 97. This is their fifth consecutive year on the Elite 1% list, confirming their dedication to resident satisfaction year after year. Venu also ranked in the top 10 in the state of California.

Through this initiative, Sequoia is extending reduced rental rates, along with waived fees and deposits, to affected individuals and families. With participating communities across Laguna Niguel, Foothill Ranch, Riverside, Simi Valley, Aliso Viejo, and Alta Loma, Sequoia aims to offer flexible leasing options to meet the immediate needs of fire victims. These homes also offer a wide range of perks including pet-friendly homes with no breed restrictions for dogs, making it easier for families to stay together during this challenging time.

WALNUT CREEK, CA - February 20, 2024 - Sequoia Equities proudly announces the removal of breed restrictions for dogs at its apartment communities, reaffirming its commitment to fostering inclusivity and providing a welcoming environment for all residents and their furry companions.

Effective immediately, residents and future residents of Sequoia communities will no longer face breed restrictions when it comes to their beloved dogs. This monumental decision reflects Sequoia's dedication to promoting a pet-friendly atmosphere and recognizes the unique bond between residents and their pets.

According to the American Pet Products Association, approximately 65 million U.S. households own a pet, with 25%-30% of them owning a breed considered restricted among many apartment communities. Sequoia's new pet policy ensures that all well-behaved pets have a place to call home, regardless of their breed.

The main objective was to increase brand awareness by targeting the top of the marketing funnel. The Sequoia Equities, Inc., Getting to Know You - Win One Month’s Free Rent Drawing ends midnight on May 10, 2022. One Contest Winner will be awarded a check equal to the lesser of one month’s rent or $5,000.00, delivered directly to them at the rental community.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

All residents of properties managed by Sequoia Equities, Inc., who are (i) renters; (ii) pay regular monthly rent to the local, on-site property manager or through automatic payment deduction online; (iii) under a current and valid lease agreement as of May 10, 2022; (iv) and who complete in its entirety the “Getting to Know You” online resident survey emailed to their email address, are automatically entered into the Contest.
All entrants must be 18 years of age or older.
Employees of Sequoia Equities, Inc., its parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, clients, partners, and suppliers, and members of the families or households of any of the above are NOT eligible to participate in this Contest.
To receive the Prize, the winner must be a current resident with all payments up-to-date as of the date that the Prize is awarded.

PRIZE:

The Prize consists of a single check payable by Sequoia Equities, Inc., and delivered to the winner in an amount equal to one month’s base rent; and no other charges or expenses of any kind.
The Prize amount shall not exceed $5,000.

Their mission is to provide dream room makeovers to children with life‐threatening illnesses. Their purpose is to surround these children with love and co‐create the space of their dreams, may it be their bedroom, playroom or other refuge away from all the medical tests and treatments they must endure at the hospital. They are about bringing hope and joy to seriously ill children as they literally fight for their lives.

Lauren has been volunteering with Rooms of Hope throughout the pandemic and beyond.

"Rooms of Hope is an organization that is very near and dear to my heart. I actually graduated from Academy of Art University with a B.F.A in Interior Architecture and Design and have always had a passion for design and creativity, and love using my skills and talents where most needed. Having a God-daughter with a rare heart condition, I saw how important it was for children to have a space of their own where they can feel comfortable and safe. I love working with children and families who need a place all their own. I consider it a real treasure to be able to combine the two things I love most, design and children. The pandemic has prevented us from being able to give children the full dream room makeover experience, but we've been able to provide "Covid friendly" versions of room makeovers with our "Dream Room in a Box'' program. Being in the pandemic has also deterred our charity event efforts which account for a huge portion of the overall funds for the year. In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Sequoia is proud to spotlight Rosie Escalante, Community Manager of Sandpiper Village in Vacaville, CA. Rosie is a proud Mexican-American, who has been working at Sequoia for close to ten years. She is a valuable member of our team and her community. We are proud to share her inspirational story with you. Hear more about Rosie, in her own words, below.

I consider myself a Mexican-American leader in my community and I am proud of my Latin roots. As a Hispanic female leader, my background and culture contribute to my role as a Manager with Sequoia in the following three areas:

I am able to be influential to others in my Sandpiper community and a role model to the Hispanic Community here in Vacaville. This is especially true for our younger generations; I try to show them that if I can be in a leadership position, they can, too. With 39% of California state residents being Hispanic, I feel it’s important to be a role model, and hopefully inspire more Hispanics to step up into leadership positions in whatever line of industry they may be in.
In being a Hispanic leader, I feel lucky to be able to share some of my culture with my residents here at Sandpiper Village. For example, prior to Covid, we had a resident event where I cooked pozole. It was fun watching the residents who never had this dish try it for the first time and love it. We chatted about what ingredients are used and I even shared my family recipe with them so they can try it at home.
Finally, I am grateful that Sequoia gives me the opportunity as a Hispanic female leader to serve the public, especially since I get to serve my very own hometown where I grew up, Vacaville. It’s a good feeling to be able to share with customers everything I know about the local community, from the best hidden restaurants to happenings in town, like our annual Fiesta Days Carnival. I am proud to come to work every day and work for such an amazing and diverse company like Sequoia. Combining this with the opportunity to give back to my hometown is priceless.

My three proudest moments:

At my 8th grade graduation, I received a presidential award, from the President at that time, Bill Clinton.
When I was 18 years old, I was on national TV showcasing dancing in a show called “Caliente”. I performed the dance “Salsa and Merengue.” It was aired on the Spanish TV channel Univision.
I was the first one in my family to go to and graduate from college. I graduated from Sacramento State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance.

Teacher Wish List Giveaway

Cub Scout Camp with a Purpose

Every year, our team members are given four paid days of Purpose time to give back to any organization that they want to show support. Giving back is both fulfilling and supports the communities around us. Recently, our Senior Marketing Manager, Tony Wilson, spent some time in the great outdoors, using some Purpose time to volunteer with his son's Boy Scout troop. Hear from Tony below as he shares his experiences as a camp leader and how his Purpose time led to a rewarding camping trip.

Camp Lassen (Near Lassen Volcanic National Park) gives youth the opportunity to hike, fish, swim, boat, climb, bike, and most importantly, create memories that last a lifetime. Recently I was given the opportunity to participate and help at my son’s Cub Scout camp and found it extremely rewarding.

The emotions this year were even more amplified due to COVID-19 last year as Camp Lassen was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic. Every kid just seemed happy to be out in the wild, even while enduring the sweltering heat. As an attending parent, I helped in facilitating activities such as creating STEM vehicles and panning for “gold” nuggets.

For some of the kids at camp, experiencing a summer camp that is primarily outdoors and rooted in the forest wilderness of the Sierra Nevadas, is like taking a spaceship to another planet. The skills that they learn and the activities that they participate in are nothing like they have experienced before. You can see the excitement and wonder brimming from the expression on their faces, as they navigate this new terrain.

Every child also learns the valuable lesson of pitching in for the community. As a group, we cleaned bathrooms and showers. We also collected dishes and silverware after dinner and learned how to sanitize them en-masse via a commercial sanitizer.

Camp Lassen ends with each Cub Scout pack performing skits on stage in front of all their friends they made during camp. After the laughter and raucous applause subsides, the Camp Director asks everyone to stand and recognize those that served our country proudly. Then, the tears start flowing on every child’s face. They understand that they will go back to the towns where they are from and might not see their new friends for another year. Camp is over, but the memories will always be there, and coming back every year just creates a new chapter in their lives that will ultimately last a lifetime.

I feel extremely lucky that Sequoia gave me this opportunity to help enrich these kids’ lives at Camp Lassen. Some of the parents were unable to attend due to the fact that they could not afford to miss time at work. Since Sequoia allowed me to use my paid Purpose Hours to attend camp, not only was I able to create lifelong memories with my son during the workweek, but I was also able to help those that were missing their parents at camp as well. Giving back to our communities is a core belief that I share with Sequoia, so this was very special to me and it created immense value in my eyes.

The days are longer, the weather is hot, and spending more time outside is a summertime essential activity. When it comes to summer, the number one food that comes to mind is BBQ! The smell consists of marinated meat, charred veggies, and succulent fruits. Skewers are a great way to BBQ all of these delicious options in a fast and efficient way, so you can spend more time soaking up the summer sun. Check out these tips below on how to create the perfect skewer recipe for your next summer BBQ!

Skewer Tips

First, you’ll want to pick out which skewer type works best for you. There are both wooden and metal options to choose from. The metal skewers will last longer over time and are reusable. The wooden skewers need to be soaked in water so they don’t catch on fire and are usually a one-time use. One thing to note, when skewering your meat, you will want it to be in square bite-size pieces.

Meat Skewers

There are so many different ways to skewer your favorite meats! The most important thing is starting with a good marinade. Some summer marinades can include BBQ sauce, teriyaki, or some simple seasonings that you love! The longer you marinate your meat, the tastier it will be. Once your marinade has set and you’re ready to BBQ, skewer the bite-size pieces placing about 6-8 on each skewer. Make sure your BBQ is at the right temperature of 350 degrees or higher and place the meat on the grill. Use these temperatures below to determine when your meat is cooked:

Fish - 145 degrees
Chicken - 165 degrees
Pork - 145 degrees
Steak - 145 degrees for medium

Once your meat has cooked to your desired temperature, serve with your favorite BBQ sides like potato salad, corn, pasta salad, salad, and more!

Veggie Skewers

Summer veggies make up some of the best for BBQing including zucchini, bell peppers, eggplant, and onions to name a few. Veggie skewers are a great option for a side, or full meal for vegetarians and vegans. Just like the meat, cutting the veggies in thick bite-size pieces will be easier to put on the skewers and will cook equally being the same size. If you are the type that likes to make your food look beautiful, stacking your veggies in a pattern on the skewer is visually appealing. Once you have your veggies stacked, season with your favorite spice and brush with your olive of choice. This will prevent any sticking on the grill. Cook your veggies to your desired consistency and enjoy!

Fruit Skewers

Summer fruits are juicy, delicious, and make for the perfect side or dessert! Watermelon, cantaloupe, peaches, grapes, and pineapple are a few favorites that make for the perfect skewer stacks. You’ll want to cut your fruit in square bite-size pieces to make it easier to stack and eat. Mix and match your favorite fruit combinations that everyone will love and enjoy.

Residents That Elevate - Lilian Phan

At Sequoia, we have many residents that stand by our mission to Elevate The Everyday. At a time when people need it most, one resident is giving back to her local community in the greatest way. Meet Lilian Phan, from Paragon at Old Town in Monrovia, CA. Lilian volunteers through her church, Redeemed Life Church in Azusa, with their homeless outreach program. Twice a week, Lilian and other volunteers make food to bring to homeless people in the community and also bring clothing donations, toiletries, and more.

Lilian loves getting involved with the community and helping those in need. “It's always been something that God has placed on my heart. I've served on my church's outreach team for years prior at another church. There was an opportunity with my current church, Redeemed Life Church in Azusa, to launch a homeless outreach. We got connected by someone who used to be homeless at the Duarte riverbed, and that's how it all started. We have a team of 2-5 people who visit them bi-weekly.” This small but mighty team has one goal in mind: to simply love the people they are giving back to. Lilian and her team are there to hug, support, feed, and pray for the people they deliver supplies to weekly. “We celebrate the day if we could plant a seed, say a kind word, be an encouragement, hug them for real, remind them of their own value...”

Recently, the kitchen range that the volunteers use to cook the meals each week slowly started to break. Our team at Paragon quickly stepped in and donated the kitchen range from their community. It's times like these that bring a smile to our face. “It meant so much to have the range donated! Our two stoves were giving up on us, and cooking times went from one to four hours. We could have used donated funds to buy the stoves, but that would take away from buying food/goods that can go directly to the homeless. It really meant a lot. Paragon is so extremely kind and generous. I'm not sure many organizations have that giving back mindset.”

Lilian continues to Elevate The Everyday with her kind heart and willingness to listen and help the people around her. Redeemed Life Church is always in need of volunteers and donations for their Saturday Food Pantry and Homeless Outreach program.

Though we practiced physical distancing throughout the pandemic, we still made sure team members were a part of our Sequoia Team. Raises to all Team Members in April '20

Taking care of our people is our priority. On an annual basis, we reward our team members with a pay increase based purely on loyalty to Sequoia, even during a pandemic.

Reopened Our Benefits Enrollment

At the start of the pandemic, we reopened our benefits enrollment to ensure all team members were able to sign up for much needed benefits during the public health crises.

"Rest and Recharge" Paid Days Off

The pandemic has proven both physically and mentally exhausting. We continue to offer additional paid days off, not counting against vacation banks. The company shuts down on these days to ensure everyone can rest and recharge.

Three and Four Day Weekend Holidays

With news of COVID-19, Sequoia has been monitoring the events closely and staying up to date with policies and procedures to keep both our residents and employees safe during this time. Homemade Pet Treats to Try For Your #PetsOfSequoia

Our pets are like family and we want to ensure they are happy and healthy. We often reward our cats and dogs with treats for obeying commands, good behavior, or just because. We cook for ourselves almost daily, so why not treat our pets, too? Check out the recipes below for some delicious homemade treats your pets will love.

Cat Treats

1/2 Cup Whole Wheat Flour
1/2 Cup Powdered Milk
1 Can of Tuna, Chicken, Or Beef With Oil
1/4 Cup of Water

First, mix the flour and milk powder until combined. In a separate bowl mix the canned meat mixture and egg together. Next, combine the meat and egg into the flour and milk powder mixture. Once fully combined, slowly add in the water until the dough is a sticky texture. Next, make small balls of dough about the size of a quarter, place them on a greased cookie sheet, and bake on 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Wait for the treats to cool before giving them to your cat. You can store these treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freezer for optimal shelf life.

Dog Treats

1 Whole Sweet Potato Cooked
1 Ripe Banana
1 Cup of Carrots Minced or Shredded
2 Cups of Flour
1 Cup of Oats
1/3 Cup of Water

First, take the skin off of the sweet potato and mash in a bowl with the banana. Once thoroughly mixed together, add the carrots, flour, and oats, and combine. Next, slowly add the water to create a dough. Roll out the dough on a floured board or countertop to your desired thickness and cut into strips. Place the strips on lined baking sheets and bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes. Store the treats in a bag or container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

4 Ways to Start Becoming More Sustainable in Your Apartment

The month of April marks the celebration of our Earth, and what better way to join in on the party than to start making changes to protect our planet. The world currently produces around 380 million tons of plastic each year that could end up as pollutants affecting our environments and oceans. Many think that becoming more sustainable is hard work, and it can be, but making small changes now in your everyday life can help the bigger picture later. Check out these tips below on how to become more sustainable in your Sequoia apartment.

Reuse What You Already Have

Reusing items that you already have is a great start to becoming more sustainable! Do you have bags from the grocery store? Reuse them on your next visit. Most grocery stores also have reusable bags to purchase. This is a one-time fee, and the bags will last longer than the paper or plastic alternatives. Another option to explore is reusable produce bags. You can wash these bags after each trip to the store, and they come in many different sizes and materials. Here are some good options!

If you buy pasta sauce or any other items that come in glass containers, you can reuse those too. Once you thoroughly clean and rinse these containers, you can now use them for food storage, or any other miscellaneous things in your household.

Regrow Your Produce

Having a garden in an apartment can be challenging, but there are small ways where you can show off your green thumb! Regrowing vegetables is a great way to use food scraps that you might just throw away. Green onions, lettuce, celery, lemongrass, and bean sprouts are just a few examples of food scraps that you can regrow in your apartment. All you need is water and a jar or container large enough for the roots of the scraps to be submerged. Simply leave about two inches of space from the root of the veggie you want to regrow and submerge it in water. Leave it in a window sill or place that gets a good amount of light throughout the day. You’ll be able to watch your veggies come to life again and use them in recipes!

Switch To a Reusable Water Bottle

We, humans, need a sufficient amount of water each day to function properly, but plastic water bottles aren’t always the greatest solution. In fact, on average it takes one plastic bottle about 450 years to decompose. By switching to a reusable water bottle, you will use less plastic. Reusable water bottles are easy to clean, and you can still take them anywhere you need. Brands like Yeti , Hydroflask , and S’well are great options that are both stylish and functional.

Reduce Your Plastic Use

Plastic is anywhere and everywhere. It’s used for packaging almost everything that we purchase. By becoming more aware of the amount of plastic we really use, we can work on slowly cutting it down in our everyday life. Check out these examples and options that you can use instead:

Cut Out Straws - A plastic drinking straw takes about 200 years to biodegrade. There are metal, silicone, or stainless steel reusable options that you can use instead. Check out these different varieties here .
Reusable Ziploc Bags - Think about how many Ziploc bags that you use on an everyday basis. They are great for food storage but unfortunately are made of plastic. There are reusable options that you can use instead. Here are some options to check out.
Reusable Coffee Cups - If you’re a coffee drinker, you probably have a collection of plastic coffee cups. By switching to a reusable coffee cup, you can reduce your plastic use. Brands like KeepCup and Stojo offer great options.

Spring Cleaning 101

Ahhh, springtime. The sun is shining, the days are longer, trees and flowers are blooming. When all you want to do is go outside and enjoy the warmer weather, there is no better time than to hole up inside and start cleaning! While it seems counterintuitive, spring cleaning is an age-old tradition that has roots in religious and cultural customs.

Back in the 1800s, long winters left homes covered in soot and grime after being heated with coal or wood, and lit with kerosene lamps. When spring arrived, a deep cleaning was absolutely necessary.

Biologically, winter months with less daylight make our bodies produce more melatonin, causing us to feel sluggish and tired. With more daylight in the spring, our bodies are naturally energized and this extra melatonin production subsides. If you’re ready to use this extra energy to get cleaning, read more below!

Tips and Tricks to Get Started

Dedicate at least a full day or two to your goal of cleaning. You may finish sooner, or you may need more time. Either way, it helps to clear your calendar so you have free time dedicated to your goal of refreshing your apartment.
Make a list of your goals for the cleaning session, including the areas you want to tackle. Some people prefer to start with the smallest/easiest task, and others prefer to start with the most difficult. Start where it feels right to you! Keeping a list will help you remain accountable during the process.
Focus on one area at a time. It can be very easy to get overwhelmed with everything you have to get done. If you focus your attention to one area or task at a time, you will find that getting through your checklist is much easier than it seems.
Purchase or gather cleaning supplies. Some supplies are absolutely necessary for this process, such as:
- Trash Bags
- Paper towels or microfiber cloths
- Sponges
- Window cleaner
- All-purpose cleaner
- Disinfecting wipes
- Duster
- Deep cleaning products for the bathroom and kitchen, such as Comet or Clorox bleach spray

Checklist

Wherever you decide to start, the checklist below will help you stay on task.

Pick a playlist. Music will help make the daunting tasks ahead slightly more enjoyable. Break out your headphones or speaker and throw on some of your favorite tunes or podcasts to get you motivated!
Declutter. This will always be the first step (after your cleaning soundtrack is selected, of course). Purge your space of any belongings that you no longer need.
- Working on your closet? Donate any clothes or shoes that no longer fit, or you haven’t worn in the past year.
- Tackling the kitchen? Throw out expired foods and condiments, and consider donating non-perishables that you don’t plan to use (like those impulse buys from when quarantine started).
- Braving the bathroom? Get rid of old bath products that have been sitting under the sink for ages. Check your medicine cabinet too for anything that may be expired or no longer needed.
Dust and sanitize. And not just dust around your things; It’s best to remove everything and get into every corner and crevice. Don’t forget those little spots around the apartment that tend to get overlooked, like window tracks, behind the toilet, light switches, and even remote controls. Areas like the kitchen and bathroom may require some heavy duty scrubbing with those deep cleaning products mentioned earlier.
Vacuum. Ensure all carpeted areas are vacuumed thoroughly. It helps to move slowly here to pick up as much dirt and debris as possible. Don’t forget to vacuum under furniture and in corners where dust tends to accumulate.
Mop. For non-carpeted areas, mopping is essential. Use a suitable cleaner for your floor type and make sure to wring out the mop well to avoid excess water on the floors.
Organize. Once everything is clean, take the time to organize your belongings. Use storage solutions like bins, baskets, and shelves to keep things in order. Labeling can also help maintain organization over time.

Meet Amanda Armstrong

Amanda Armstrong is a mental & physical health coach and Founder of Rise As We. Helping people master their physical and mental health is her jam. As a certified coach with a MA in Kinesiology and 10+ years experience as a certified personal trainer and mental health coach, she helps others reclaim control of their lives using fitness, meditation, community, nervous system healing, and other research-supported lifestyle changes. She’s a 200hr certified yoga instructor as well as a prenatal and postpartum fitness specialist. Her goal with her coaching and programs is to put everything people need to reconnect to their body, rewire their mind, and reclaim their life all in one place!

Amanda will join us on February 17th for a session focused on meditation and yoga stretches tailored to all fitness levels. She will also be hosting an extensive Q&A following the session to anonymously answer any questions related to mental health and mindfulness. Learn more about Amanda’s career below.

1. How did you get started in your coaching career?

I started personal training when I was in college and have been doing it since. I was a collegiate track & field athlete, got my MA in Kinesiology with an emphasis in sport and exercise psychology. I love all things mental and physical health. After college I got a job at Google Headquarters in CA as a health specialist and personal trainer. There I not only worked with clients on their physical health, but was able to support their mental well-being as well. In 2015, I found myself in a dark place after some big life events. On the outside I put on a good face, but my anxiety and depression got pretty bad. I knew all the science behind lifestyle management, but couldn’t find the support from doctors, therapists, or other coaches that quite fit. This was when I found mindfulness and meditation -- this ultimately led me to yoga as well -- but I really struggled to find a place that gave mental and physical health and equal seat at the table. So, when I got to the other side of this struggle, I created that. I created the research based programs I so desperately needed during that time in my life. And finally in January of 2019, I spent a month in Bali getting my 200hr Yoga Teacher Training Certification through Zuna Yoga to be able to incorporate more of that into my life and programs. This is a long way of telling you that my coaching has evolved from being a personal trainer at a college gym to Google to founding my own company that provides programs that put fitness, mindfulness, and community all in one place.

2. What are your greatest accomplishments in your profession?

Getting a job at Google was incredible, but my business Rise As We and the work I do with women here is by far what I’m most proud of. I help women reclaim their lives.

3. What is your favorite thing about your profession?

I help women feel more confident and I get to turn strangers on the internet into family.

4. Tell us about Rise As We and the inspiration behind it.

I feel like I got into this a little above but with Rise As We I have a place to create the programs that I so desperately needed at certain times in my life. The “life coaching” world is kinda funky, everyone thinks they can be a coach but quality is hard to come by. I wanted to use my Masters Degree and over a decade of experience to bring research based programs out into the world -- especially for mental health. So many people think their only options are therapy or medication, and there’s definitely a time and place for both of those amazing resources, but there’s also SO MUCH SCIENCE and research out there showing the impact of certain lifestyle changes. 5. What tips do you have for someone looking to get started with their journey into yoga and meditation?

Start small - 3 deep breaths every morning or free YouTube guided meditations. Meditation is just a time to intentionally practice being still and with yourself completely. It’s not about “clearing your mind” or reaching enlightenment, at least not for me, I take a much more practical approach to it. It’s intentional time to train your mind’s focus, just like you train your body in a gym -- you train your mind in meditation. It also physically heals parts of your brain damaged by stress, but that’s a conversation for another day! And with yoga, it’s about so much more than cool poses -- it’s about connecting your mind, body, and breath. So same advice, start small and know that simple movements, strung together with your breath, is yoga -- who cares if you can do the splits or hold a handstand. It’s about coming home to you, just start and quit comparing yourself to that person on instagram ;)

Lunar New Year 2021

Since February 12th marks the official start of the Lunar New Year, the team at Sequoia wanted to share some ways that our team members celebrate as well as some insight into your own Chinese Zodiac! 2021 is the Year of the Ox, and is believed to be a lucky year, perfect for focusing on important relationships in our lives.

Lunar New Year typically begins with the new moon that occurs between the end of January and the end of February, and it lasts about 15 days, until the full moon arrives with the Festival of Lanterns. The dates are different every year, depending on when the first new moon of the New Year takes place.

The holiday is celebrated by many Asian countries and cultures, such as China, South Korea, Singapore, Vietnam and Taiwan. Although specific celebrations for the holiday vary by region and culture, there is a specific commonality: It is a time to reunite with immediate and extended family to ring in the New Year.

Below are some quotes from our Team Members who celebrate, highlighting their favorite things about the holiday:

Traditions

There are many traditions practiced during Lunar New Year, many of which are based on superstitions that have been passed down through generations over thousands of years. It is believed that the actions of a family during Lunar New Year set the stage for the year ahead, so those that celebrate are very careful to avoid certain taboos that are believed to usher in bad luck and misfortune. Below are some examples of the customs and the reasoning behind them:

The color red: The color red symbolizes good luck, fortune, happiness, and abundance. It is often worn and used for decoration in celebrations.
Red Envelopes, called “Hong bao”: Red envelopes are filled with money and given to children and unmarried adults with no job. Money must be given in even numbers, as odd numbers are believed to bring unhappiness.
Traditional foods: The meal on Chinese New Year’s Eve is considered the most important dinner of the year. While the celebration lasts 15 days, meals typically include “Eight Treasures Rice”, “Tang Yuan” aka black sesame rice ball soup, and chicken, duck, or pork dishes. Meat and fish dishes must be served whole, with the head symbolizing a good beginning of the new year, and the tail representing the end of the year that just passed. Noodles represent life and longevity, and cannot be cut, as this can be considered a bad omen for shortening life.
Fireworks: Setting off fireworks are customary and are believed to scare away evil spirits and negative energy.
Dragon Dance: The Chinese believe that performing this dance drives away evil spirits and ushers in good luck and blessings for the community in the New Year. The dance is performed by a team of experienced dancers who manipulate a long flexible figure of a dragon using poles positioned at regular intervals along the length of the dragon.

The following are some taboos that must be considered during this time:

No hair or clothes washing: It washes away good luck.
No white or black clothing should be worn: These are unlucky colors associated with death.
No sewing needle work: It depletes wealth and represents “poking holes at life.”
No sweeping: It sweeps away wealth.
No crying: It brings bad luck.
No porridge: It represents poverty.
No crab or lobster: Eating animals that move sideways or backwards are thought to cause setbacks.
No lending or borrowing money: It leads to debt.

Zodiac

The Chinese zodiac, known as Sheng Xiao or Shu Xiang, consists of a 12-year cycle of animal signs based on the lunar calendar. Boasting a history of more than 2000 years, it plays an essential role in Chinese culture. The 12 Chinese zodiac animals in a cycle are not only used to represent years in China, but also believed to influence people’s personalities, career, compatibility, marriage, and fortune.

1. How did you get started in your career?

I got started in my current career field when I was still serving Active Duty in the Army. I actually have a transformation story of my own that led me to having a career in health and fitness. Long story short, fitness saved my life. When I was at the lowest point in my life mentally where I lacked self-love, confidence, a sense of direction, and the will to try and figure out how to pick myself up alone, I took the step to find a mentor. That was hands down the best decision I've ever made. My mentor had gone through similar experiences in the past as I was going through and was able to teach me invaluable lessons and guide me on the way to my goals at the time that I had for myself. Fitness helped boost my confidence, change my body, and feel strong during that time. Developing a different mindset happened along the way and getting help that year completely changed my life. I loved the new me so much and I knew that there had to be other people that were feeling frustrated and depressed in their lives but had goals that they really wanted to achieve. I started out by offering one person my help and I instantly fell in love with it. It made me feel fulfilled and that's when I knew I had found not just a career but my purpose. I created the Chief Battle Fitness community in order to inspire and empower everyone to be their best self but I focus my training on women and mothers. I believe that mothers are SUPERHEROES hands down starting with my own. There isn’t a more important job in this world if you ask me and that’s why my goal is to uplift, transform, and teach as many of them as possible how to love themselves, reach their goals (both fitness and life), and put themselves first. So many people, especially women, don’t even know what it feels like to look in the mirror and love the person staring back or how to be strong through the battles that life can (and will) throw at us. I’m here to show them how.

2. What are your greatest accomplishments as a fitness coach?

My greatest accomplishments as a fitness coach include:

3. What keeps you inspired and motivated to help your clients in their fitness journey?

That's easy, them! Believe it or not, my clients inspire me. I get up every day and just walk in my purpose. It isn’t a challenge for me to stay motivated to want to help my clients day in and day out because it's what I love to do. On top of that, if you see the work that CBF clients put in behind the scenes… I think it would inspire anybody. They work hard for their goals every day while maintaining businesses, families, jobs, kids, etc. I literally train superheroes and it pushes me every day to be the best version of myself too. The better they become the better I have to be for them and that keeps me learning, growing, and motivated every day.

4. What is your favorite exercise to do outside of your classes?

Outside of my own training sessions, I love lifting heavy and boxing. Most of my own training that I do almost always involves lifting weights and then going into some form of high-intensity combat training. I am currently training to compete in MMA so I am super excited about the goals I have for myself this year as well.

5. Can you give any advice for anyone starting out their fitness journey and how to stick with it?

I could write a book about how to start your fitness journey and stick with it (I probably will in the future lol) because there are so many answers to that question. Everyone is different but there are a few things that no matter what I recommend you do and a few things that I recommend you don’t do.

DO: START NOW - where you are, with what you have. TAKE ACTION towards your goals.

DON'T: WAIT - that “perfect time” you’ve been waiting on to start doesn’t exist. It’s probably just fear of the unknown or fear of failure causing you to subconsciously make excuses.

DO: GET HELP - trust me… it will save you a lot of frustration and countless amounts of time. To this very day, I myself still have mentors and fitness coaches that help me reach my goals. I practice what I preach and invest in myself and my goals in life, period my #1 way of achieving what I have today in my business and fitness goals. Don’t be cheap, understand that your health and fitness is an investment, not an expense. I always say “You can pay now to keep yourself healthy by choice, or you can pay later by force because you have to (doctor bills, medications, etc)”.

DON'T: DO IT ALONE - I’m sure you’ve tried it that way up until this point. In order to stay on track, you need accountability and community.

DO: HAVE A PLAN - Remember this “A goal without a plan is just a wish” you will need a blueprint that works for YOU when it comes to your goals. How will you get there? Well, you already have the first 3 steps of your plan above from the DOs I have given but you will need a clear training/workout and nutrition strategy that is specific to your goals.

DON'T: Depend on Google or YouTube to be your trainer - I know, I know, they have all of the answers right? Absolutely not, they have great workouts and advice for a general audience but it's not specific to the individual. If you are a beginner or even if you are stuck/plateaued mid-journey then you will become overwhelmed with the amount of information that is out there. Most clients that I have come to me feeling like they have tried EVERYTHING and are frustrated by it. You don’t need to try everything just the ONE thing that works for you, your lifestyle, your body, and your goals.

6. A lot of people struggle with their mindset, especially after the tumultuous year we just had. As a mindset coach, what do you recommend to help stay level-headed and in a good frame of mind?

Last year was a hard battle for me personally, the hardest year of my life to date actually since I lost my dad due to the virus. One thing that I can tell you is that a lot of prayer got me through that. Outside of spirituality, there are a few key things that I recommend to help stay in a positive state of mind when you are facing challenges in life.

When you are struggling with your mindset or going through hardships one of the worst things you can do is stop doing the things that make you feel good every day. Some people start going through hard times and then stop showing up to the gym, doing their workouts at home, or start eating junk foods regularly. All of those things literally will cause you to feel even worse than you already do. Hold on to the things that make you feel good, as a matter of fact, do them even more, be intentional. You have to literally try and focus on the positive things around you and bring more of that to you. I also believe that meditation is very important when it comes to mindset because it helps to reduce stress and that makes it easier for you to stay calm and positive during challenging times. It definitely takes a little practice but quieting your mind is more important than you think.

DIY Succulent Pumpkin

DIY projects are becoming more and more popular. With fall in full swing, setting up your favorite decor is a staple. Whether you have a green thumb, a love for DIY projects, or just love the fall season, creating a succulent pumpkin is both simple and easy for everyone! Add this succulent pumpkin to your patio or balcony, doorstep, or even as a centerpiece for your table. The possibilities are endless! Here is what you need:

Succulents - Grab your favorite variety! You will need enough to fill the circumference of the pumpkin.
A Pumpkin - Any pumpkin, small or large, will do the trick!
Tools - A knife or pumpkin carving tool to take the top off the pumpkin. You will also need a spoon to scoop out the pumpkin guts.
A Pot - You will want to choose a pot that will fit inside your pumpkin. Once the fall season is over, you can toss the pumpkin and keep the potted succulents!
Soil - Any type of soil will do.

Steps

Follow the steps below to create your own succulent pumpkin.

Start by tracing an outline of the pot you will be using on the top of your pumpkin. You will have to adjust the hole to make sure the pot fits inside the pumpkin without being seen. Once you have your outline traced, use your carving tool to carve out the top of the pumpkin in a circle. Next, take the top off the pumpkin and scoop out the guts.
Next, adjust the outline of the pumpkin you traced so the pot will fit inside.
Once your pot fits inside the pumpkin, it is time to plant your succulents! Start by adding your soil to the pot. Make sure the soil fills to ¾ of the way to the top. Now, start planting your succulents by arranging them any way you please. You’ll want to make sure you fill up the pot with a good amount of succulents. Once you have all of your plants placed, feel free to add some extra soil to fill in any empty spaces. You’ll want to water the succulents right away, but not too heavily! Succulents are low maintenance plants and only need to be watered once every two weeks. The best part about using the pot is that once your pumpkin goes bad, you can take out the pot and reuse it for other decor purposes!

National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from September 15th to October 15th, celebrating the history, culture, and contributions of Americans whose ancestors descended from Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

At Sequoia, we are proud to embrace, share, celebrate, and educate our team members on this holiday. Our team members let us know how they celebrate. They shared their family traditions during Hispanic Heritage Month with us, and now, we are so excited to share them with you!

"I gather with my family and cook some traditional Mexican dishes like 'pozole' or 'enchiladas' on the weekend around September 16th, which is Mexican Independence Day. We also like to play Mexican music like 'cumbia' and 'merengue' to sing and dance to.

In our Mexican heritage, we like to see performances of dancers of ballet folklorico (Mexican danza), be around our family, let the little ones break a 'piñata', eat some of our favorite Mexican dishes, and end the night dancing to Latin music like 'cumbia,' 'merengue' or 'banda'.

When I was in High School I danced ballet folklorico (Mexican danza), to share this Mexican tradition with the entire school. I would do dance performances for Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independence Day."

Going back to school is looking a little different this year as most schools and classes transition to online distance learning. Although this change can be challenging, it’s also important to make sure you or your family members have everything they need to succeed. From supplies to a workspace and all things in-between, we’ve compiled a list of tips to help make distance learning easier from your Sequoia home!

Supplies

Backpack? Don’t need it. Shoes? Optional. Your supply list may look a little different this year, as you won’t need to worry about some of the essentials you usually need, such as a new lunchbox or even new back to school clothes. But the basics are still important! Notebooks, binders, pens, pencils, and coloring tools are all supplies you should keep on your list as these are essential whether you are in a classroom or at home. A new item you might want to add to your shopping list this year would be noise canceling headphones so everyone can focus on their work in a quiet environment.

Organize Your Study Space

Now that you have your supplies in check, let’s talk about studying space. When it comes to distance learning it is important to have a dedicated area to study and set up for school. Whether you have a desk, set aside some counter space, or anything else you see fit, it’s important to differentiate your work space from your general home space. This will not only help get into the school state of mind, but will also help you and your family relax and unwind after a long day of work and school. If you really want to elevate your work space, add a lamp for additional lighting, an indoor plant for some fresh greenery, and an essential oil diffuser to create a relaxing ambiance. It's your classroom now - you get to decorate it!

Make a Plan and Stick to it!

Being at home can be very distracting, especially when there are others around. That’s why it’s important to make a plan and stick with it. Just like a school schedule, a routine is essential even when learning from home. Put together a daily schedule for your new virtual day starting with breakfast, learning, lunch etc. and stick to it! Another way to ensure that you’re staying on track is to make a list of what needs to be accomplished for each day. Using a chalkboard , white board , or a poster board is a great way to visualize your tasks for the day and can assist with holding yourself accountable. And we all know how good it feels to physically cross something off the to-do list! Remember, you aren’t perfect and not everything will run according to plan. This is new for everyone so trial and error of new solutions and accepting that there will be challenges along the way will only help in the long run. Flexibility is key! Also don’t forget to have fun! Although school is serious, it is still important to make it fun and have a break when needed.

Take a Break

With distance learning, you are essentially always home, so it’s important to take a break from your workspace. Taking a break is okay and encouraged for a healthy school life balance. Recess is a great opportunity to relax your mind by stretching, running around, getting in a workout, or simply just walking away from your screen. It also gives your family members time to get out of the house as well. It is also important to take small breaks to eat a snack, take a lap around the house, or to play with your pet. These small breaks will help you stay focused and motivated throughout the day.

Distance learning is new for everyone and it’s important to remember that you are not alone. By following these tips and creating a positive learning environment, you and your family can make the most out of this new experience. Remember to stay flexible, have fun, and take breaks when needed. You’ve got this!

Who doesn’t love a fun event?! Food, games, activities… the list goes on. If you weren’t already excited, you definitely should be now! Each Sequoia community hosts different events for their residents multiple times throughout the year. These events are hosted onsite and are a way to bring the community together for some fun while getting to know one another. From virtual paint nights to live music showcases, and everything in between, each community has the opportunity to put together a fun-filled event for everyone to attend. Aside from the main events, some communities also host regular local food trucks, movie nights, holiday-themed pop-ups, fun giveaways, and more! At Sequoia, we aren’t just your average apartment community. Resident Portal - Active Building

Our resident portal, also known as Active Building, is a platform for our residents to stay informed about different happenings at their Sequoia community. Team members will post about different events scheduled, things going on at the property such as maintenance or community updates, and any other information you should know about. Residents can also post on the platform to ask questions and share information with other residents.

The portal can also be used to make reservations at any of the amenities available at your Sequoia community. You can also enter packages that you have ordered so you can track delivery and be notified when it arrives. These little conveniences can make such a difference, and we want to make everything as easy as possible for our residents!

Pets Of Sequoia

Your pets are considered family at all of our Sequoia communities. Many of our communities are filled with dog parks, runs, or areas for your pet to get out and enjoy the outside world. If you are thinking about adding another pet to your family, we got you covered. If you adopt from a local shelter or humane society we will reimburse you up to $250 through our PAWS program. They are low maintenance, some species don’t require direct sunlight, and they only need to be watered every about every two weeks. If real plants aren’t your thing, faux plants are a great alternative and can look just like the real thing!

Add Some Ambiance With Different Forms of Lighting

Summer nights are the perfect time for relaxation after a long day. One way to set the mood on your patio or balcony is to add some additional lighting. There are many different lighting styles you can use that don’t take up a lot of space and look good, too.

The month of June celebrates Pride Month, when LGBTQ communities come together to celebrate the freedom to be themselves. This month was chosen to pay tribute to the Stonewall uprising in June 1969 in New York City, which helped start the modern gay rights movement. Most Pride celebrations take place each year in June, but due to COVID-19, most events have been canceled. Because of this, you can now celebrate virtually all month long! Here at Sequoia we support the LGBTQ community and encourage our team members to be their true, authentic selves every day. NYC Pride - NYC Pride has over 50 different events throughout the year to celebrate, but features special events during Pride Month. Tune in virtually on Youtube or Facebook live for different events like a Garden Party or a virtual 5K Art Run!
Global Pride - Global Pride will stream artists, campaigners, speeches, activists, public figures, and more for 24 hours on June 27th celebrating the beautiful diversity of people all over the world.
San Francisco Pride - SF Pride will be hosting a pre-recorded two day online celebration highlighting speakers, elected officials, performances, DJ sets, and more!
San Diego Pride - San Diego Pride is celebrated year round, but during Pride Month they have special events including Bingo, multiple 5K runs/walks, support groups, and more.

Your patio or balcony is the best summer hangout spot, so grab your favorite beverage, a cozy blanket, your favorite chair and turn off all the lights for the ultimate stargazing experience. Try a New Summer Recipe to Cool Off

What better way to cool off this summer than with a frozen treat?! Homemade popsicles are an easy summer recipe and are versatile with their ingredients to get your creative juices flowing, literally. This recipe is flexible in that you can use whatever fruits you have on hand. Here’s what you’ll need:

Popsicle sticks
Popsicle molds (optional - you can use a muffin tin as well)
A blender - to blend your fruity concoction
Your favorite fruit combination

Some of our favorite popsicle combos include minty watermelon, raspberry peach yogurt, orange mango and so many more. The combinations are truly endless. Once you decide on your combination, simply add your ingredients into a blender and mix them up. Then, pour the mixture into the molds or muffin tins, add the popsicle sticks and freeze for up to six hours. The best part about popsicles is that you don’t have to turn on your oven, keeping your apartment cool for the summer.

Beat the heat by throwing the coolest summer themed movie night! The first thing you need is to pick the perfect movie. Some of our favorites include: Grease, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Sandlot, Endless Summer, Moana and so many more! Many of these movies can be streamed on platforms including Disney+, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Youtube TV, HBO Go, Crackle and Fandango. If you don’t have any of these streaming services, most offer a free trial. Once you pick the movie, snacks are in order. Plant The Ultimate Summer Garden

Summer is the perfect time to start your own garden from your patio or balcony. There are so many different vegetables and herbs that can grow in small places and don’t take up a lot of space. Here are the perfect summer plants that you should have in your garden.

Tomatoes - You can plant tomatoes in a medium sized pot, in the sunniest place on your patio or balcony. They are pretty low maintenance and just require watering every other day.
Strawberries - They are one fruit you can grow in pots or hanging planters. They need a good amount of sunlight, but you only need to water them every other day!
Herbs - the best herbs to grow in the summer heat include Basil, Chives, Dill, Parsley, Sage and Thyme. These can be grown in small pots together or smaller planter beds. When it comes to watering your herbs once a week is ideal, but pay attention to the soil. If it’s dry, your plant needs water!

Sequoia Stories From Lunch is On Us

We understand these last few months have not been easy. This is uncharted territory, but as we continue to navigate the new “normal,” our goal at Sequoia stays the same. We want to ensure that both our residents and employees continue to stay happy, healthy, and safe. Last month, we implemented Lunch is On Us, offering to provide lunch to every Sequoia resident as a way to bring a smile to their faces and comfort them in this time of uncertainty. Lunch is On Us helped us support 93 local businesses and delivered 57,175 lunches to our residents.

We saw hundreds of pictures, social media posts, and comments from our team members and residents alike. Seeing the smiles it brought to our residents and the local businesses only confirmed what we already knew to be true: the unexpected moments of joy are what defines us as a company that cares about its people. That’s why on May 21st, in conjunction with Sequoia Cares, we decided to do it again with our second Lunch is On Us! Our teams have been working so hard behind the scenes, going above and beyond to take care of their residents, and we want to share the moments with you. Sequoia Wellness Series

Disappointment, loneliness, and uncertainty are three of the most common feelings people have had surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. After conducting a company-wide survey about how our employees were feeling and coping, we took their feedback to create our Wellness Series, a collection of tools, resources, and conversations with reputable guest speakers. The purpose of this series is to help offer solutions and resources for our teams to access and learn from, as well as to create an open dialogue around topics that many employees would find benefit and comfort talking through. During the course of the series, our team members will learn new coping techniques, how to navigate through this new world, build new skill sets, and overcome challenges they may face throughout the pandemic and beyond.

5/15 Wellness Series - Controlling Our Thoughts and Emotions With Erika Westhoff

Our first Wellness Series speaker, Erika Westhoff, a sports psychologist, discussed the techniques athletes use to strengthen their mental toughness and how this can help overcome feelings of stress and anxiety during the pandemic. Throughout the webinar, Erika helped our employees identify their “why.” This interactive exercise had our employees write down and walk through why they want to do their best at work, at home, and in their personal relationships. The point of this exercise was to help our team members identify specific goals they wanted to achieve and find what helps get them through the day.

Another exercise Erika walked our teams through was focused on our thought awareness, specifically surrounding the pandemic. Our employees wrote down three common thoughts that have been most prominent when they are under stress, trying to solve a problem, following a mistake, or while experiencing uncertainty. From there, they were able to recognize what thoughts are affecting them and how to go about relieving these uncertainties. By making ourselves aware of our thoughts and the reasoning behind them, we can more easily identify them moving forward and decide what we want to do to be more in control of them in the future.

Overall, our goal at Sequoia is to help our employees get through these uncertain and new challenging times by providing them with the tools and resources they need to succeed. We want our employees to feel confident and supported in building healthy and productive approaches to work and life.

6/5 Wellness Series - Taking Care of Yourself and Teammates

We kicked off our second Wellness Series with speaker Dr. Dennis Davis, Ph.D. Dr. Davis brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the webinar as a Clinical Psychologist. Our goal in this session was to provide team members with pointers to help them deal with the current crisis in a healthy manner, both personally and professionally.

We first discussed the concept of "emotional contagion," which is the idea that our moods and emotions are contagious and can be caught by others. This highlighted the importance of being purposeful about the emotions that we put off so that we can be a positive influence on those around us through our behavior and attitudes. From there, Dr. Davis provided several practical tips to help our team members practice emotionally healthy thinking and habits, to equip us to foster a positive environment for ourselves and those around us.

Our second major topic was post-traumatic growth. Many people are familiar with the idea of post-traumatic stress, but fewer are aware that there is also the potential for growth following a traumatic event. Dr. Davis shared that by focusing on the positive aspects of our experiences and the opportunities for growth, we can emerge from challenging times stronger and more resilient.

At Sequoia, we are committed to supporting our employees' well-being and providing them with the resources they need to navigate these unprecedented times. Our Wellness Series is just one of the many ways we are working to ensure our team members feel supported, valued, and equipped to face the challenges ahead.

Sequoia Feeds Residents With Lunch Is On Us Program

Sometimes the simplest things can make the biggest difference in someone’s day. With so many lives affected by COVID-19, we wanted to do something for our residents to help bring a smile to their faces. And as we all know during this time, simply finding what you need at the grocery store can be a difficult feat.

One of our main goals at Sequoia is to win hearts and fans by actively seeking out opportunities to make our customers truly happy. As part of Sequoia Cares, on Thursday, April 23rd, we delivered lunch to our residents, feeding and providing convenience for them, all while supporting local restaurants.

With a portfolio size of 54 communities stretching from Seattle, WA, all the way down to Southern California, we were able to order 24,475 lunches for our amazing residents. Those lunch orders helped us support 39 different small businesses, including both restaurants and food trucks in cities across the West Coast. None of this would have been possible without our team members on-site organizing and delivering the meals to each one of our happy residents.

Chicken Curry

Prep: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 35-40 minutes

Ready In: 45 minutes

What You'll Need:

250 grams chicken breast, washed thoroughly and thinly sliced
3 tbsp olive oil
1 small cinnamon stick
2 whole cloves
1 bay leaf
1 tbsp cumin seed
3/4 cup finely chopped onion
2 tbsp ginger garlic paste
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1 tbsp red chili powder
2 tbsp grated dry coconut
1 1/2 tsp curry powder
1 1/2 cup water
Coriander leaves for garnish
1/2 lime
Salt for taste

Directions:

Heat up oil in a large pan on medium heat for 3-4 minutes, or until hot.
Add cinnamon stick, cloves, bay leaf, and cumin seeds to the pan and cook for 1 minute.
Next, add onion and sauté for 5 minutes, or until it becomes golden in color.
Add ginger garlic paste and turmeric powder. Cook for 1 minute, mixing well.
Slowly add sliced chicken breast to the pan.
Add red chili powder. Mix well.
Cover and cook for 10 minutes.
In another pan, roast dried coconut on medium heat for 2-3 minutes, or until it becomes pink in color.
Transfer coconut to a blender. Blend until it is very fine.
Add blended coconut to the chicken and mix well.
Add curry powder and mix well.
Add a pinch of salt and cook for 5 more minutes.
Check the tenderness of the chicken. If it is not done, adjust the temperature and cook on low for another 5 minutes before checking again.
Mix well. Serve with jasmine rice or naan bread. Garnish with coriander leaves and lime juice.

Chocolate Avocado Mousse

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 15 minutes

Serves: 4

What You'll Need:

2 ripe hass avocados
1/2 frozen banana
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1/4 cup cacao powder
1/4 cup cashew milk
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup cashew butter
1/2 cup coconut sugar

Topping:

1/4 cup raspberries
1/4 cup chopped chocolate
2 tbsp chopped pistachios

Directions:

In a food processor, add all the ingredients (except topping ingredients).
Blend on 'high' for sixty seconds, or until you achieve a creamy texture.
Pour the mixture into four small cups, cover with plastic wrap, and chill for four hours.
Top with chopped chocolate, raspberries, and pistachios. Serve immediately.

We're celebrating the spring season with delicious, healthy dishes! As a talented recipe developer and food stylist, Ayesha had no problem creating spring-inspired meals for us to share. Prepped, cooked, and plated in her Sequoia kitchen, check out the second of her three dishes... the main course!

Spicy Prawn, Cold Noodle Salad

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Serves: 3

What You'll Need:

10-12 medium prawns, shelled and de-veined
2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
2.5 oz dried rice noodles
3 cups kale
1 cup beansprouts
1/4 cup sliced carrots
4 tbsp jalapenos
1/2 cup red cabbage
2 tbsp cilantro
2 tbsp chopped scallions
1 tbsp avocado oil
Red chili flakes

Dressing:

1/4 cup lime juice
1/2 cup peanut butter
1 tbsp coconut sugar
1/2 tsp red chili powder
1/4 cup water

Directions:

In a non-stick pan, add 1 tbsp of avocado oil. Add chopped garlic, salt, red pepper flakes, and shrimp. Cook on medium-high heat until shrimp are pink and cooked thoroughly.
In a separate bowl, add peanut butter, water, chili powder, lime juice, salt, and coconut sugar. Mix well and set dressing aside.
Prepare the rice noodles according to package directions. After cooked, run through cold water to ensure they do not overcook.
In a serving bowl, add kale and rice noodles.
Top with shrimp, bean sprouts, sliced carrots, jalapenos, red cabbage, scallions, and cilantro.
Drizzle dressing on top and serve immediately.

Let's celebrate the spring season with colorful, healthy, do-able recipes that are sure to satisfy. One of our residents, who has quite the knack for creating recipes and styling food, whipped up a few beautiful dishes in her Sequoia kitchen... and she documented it all for us!

The first of her three recipes begins here, with our first course.

Arugula and Watermelon Radish Salad

Prep Time: 5 Minutes

Cook Time: 5 Minutes

Serves: 3-4 People

What You'll Need:

2 cups of wild arugula, rinsed and pat-dried
3 tablespoons shaved Parmesan cheese
1/4 cup olive oil
1 cup sliced watermelon radishes
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 cup pickled onions
2 teaspoons lemon juice

Directions:

In a small bowl, whisk lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Slowly add in olive oil, stirring well.
On a bed of arugula, add the sliced watermelon radishes and pickled onions. Drizzle dressing and top it off with a sprinkle of shaved Parmesan.

PAWS: Pet Appreciation With Sequoia
