A Greater Purpose With Sequoia

At Sequoia, we understand that we are not just a property management company. Our Purpose is much greater than that. Through our initiative, “A Greater Purpose”, team members have the opportunity to share causes close to their heart. Sequoia highlights these organizations to all team members in an effort to create awareness and donates to select organizations on their behalf.

Check out our 2021 recipients and hear from our team members as they share why they nominated these organizations and what they mean to them.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital - $2,500 Recipient

St. Jude is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life threatening diseases. The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment.

"This organization is important to me because I personally know one person/family that has received care by the St. Jude team. Their child's treatment, housing, food, and expenses were all taken care of by the hospital so the family could focus on their child, rather than their bank account.” - Natalie M., Vendor Account Coordinator

Breast Cancer Research Foundation - $1,000 Recipient

BCRF is the largest private funder of breast cancer research and metastatic breast cancer research worldwide and is the highest‐rated breast cancer organization in the country. They provide critical funding for cancer research worldwide to fuel advances in tumor biology, genetics, prevention, treatment, metastasis, and survivorship.

"I chose the Breast Cancer Research foundation because when I was 14 years old I lost my mom to breast cancer. She was only 40 years old and had been battling stage 4 breast cancer for almost 10 years.

My mom was truly the kind of person who touched everyone's life. I remember reading her high school yearbook when I was younger and seeing hundreds of peoples notes to her and they all came to the same conclusion: my mom made lasting impressions on people for being someone who was always kind to every person she interacted with. She and I were extremely close. She was my best friend and soulmate. We always had so much fun together. My mom always put her family first. She never wanted us to see her struggling with what I knew she was going through. Losing her was very hard on me, especially as a young teenage girl.

I truly had the best mom anyone could ever ask for. I will always find a way to honor her and pay tribute to her memory by making sure that I do my part in raising awareness and money so that no other girls have to lose their best friend too soon.” - Shelby G., Leasing Consultant

Rooms of Hope - $1,000 Recipient

Their mission is to provide dream room makeovers to children with life‐threatening illnesses. Their purpose is to surround these children with love and co‐create the space of their dreams, may it be their bedroom, playroom or other refuge away from all the medical tests and treatments they must endure at the hospital. They are about bringing hope and joy to seriously ill children as they literally fight for their lives.

Lauren has been volunteering with Rooms of Hope throughout the pandemic and beyond.

"Rooms of Hope is an organization that is very near and dear to my heart. I actually graduated from Academy of Art University with a B.F.A in Interior Architecture and Design and have always had a passion for design and creativity, and love using my skills and talents where most needed. Having a God-daughter with a rare heart condition, I saw how important it was for children to have a space of their own where they can feel comfortable and safe. I love working with children and families who need a place all their own. I consider it a real treasure to be able to combine the two things I love most, design and children. The pandemic has prevented us from being able to give children the full dream room makeover experience, but we've been able to provide "Covid friendly" versions of room makeovers with our "Dream Room in a Box'' program. Being in the pandemic has also deterred our charity event efforts which account for a huge portion of the overall funds for the year. This donation will be a huge help in allowing us to continue to serve our community and help provide these warrior children with a safe haven.” - Lauren E., Training and Development Coordinator

Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary - $500 Recipient

Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary is an animal rescue group dedicated to protecting and improving the lives of homeless and abused animals throughout the Sacramento area. Happy Tails values the life of every cat and dog by providing compassionate care and cage-free shelter for homeless animals and working toward ending overpopulation and mistreatment.

"I'm a huge animal lover and would adopt them all if I could. A friend of mine has been fostering kittens for them for years. She says she likes to work with them because they are a no kill shelter, they never give up on any animal, they have dedicated volunteers, and they offered fostering and adopting even during covid - when many of the public shelters had to dramatically reduce services. They are a small non profit that relies on donations to operate, so the Sequoia donation will be a great help to them. Thank you Sequoia!” - Brittany R., Community Manager
